USA, France, United Kingdom, 2012. Filmmakers: Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel. 88 minutes.
Produced within the Sensory Ethnography Lab at Harvard University, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel’s film fully immerses its viewers, over the course of an hour and a half, in the everyday life of a fishing crew near Massachusetts. With the help of several cameras placed in various locations on the vessel and underwater, the representation becomes downright nightmarish, though constantly fascinating and punctuated by images that are overwhelmingly beautiful, yet also threatening. We feel we are in the belly of an immense whale, a contemporary Moby Dick, trapped between machines, people, birds, water, with no chance of escape.
